Why the Small Details Matter in Your Photo Session
The small details matter because they’re often the first things you notice after your photo session—when it’s too late to fix them. Hair ties on wrists, untied shoes, crooked collars, or a phone in a back pocket can easily pull attention away from the connection and emotion in your photos. As a photographer, I can help guide and adjust during your session, but starting with those little things already checked allows us to focus on what truly matters: genuine moments, natural smiles, and a relaxed experience. When the details are taken care of, your images feel polished, timeless, and stress-free instead of distracting.
Shoes Matter More Than You Think in Photos
Shoes matter more in photos than most people realize because they anchor the entire outfit from the ground up. Bright colors, athletic shoes, or Crocs can instantly pull attention away from faces and connection, especially in full-body or walking shots. I completely understand that getting a family—especially one with multiple kids—out the door dressed and looking good is no small task. That’s why laying out clothes and shoes ahead of time is such a game changer. Before you head out, do one last check to make sure what you carefully planned is actually what’s walking out the door. Taking those extra few minutes helps your photos feel cohesive, polished, and timeless instead of distracted by footwear you didn’t plan on seeing in your gallery.
Check Hair Before You Leave (and One Last Time on Arrival)
Hair plays a huge role in how polished your photos feel, and it’s one of the easiest things to overlook. Wind happens, I have you move around a lot, and kids are constantly running, hugging, and climbing—so hair that isn’t secured or styled can quickly end up covering faces. Bangs that are half grown out are especially tricky and should be pinned back or sprayed so they don’t fall into the middle of your face. The goal is for your photos to highlight your expressions, connection, and beautiful features—not a stray chunk of hair stealing the spotlight. A little extra time spent styling, pulling back, or spraying hair makes a big difference in keeping your images clean, timeless, and distraction-free.
Final 5-Minute Photo Session Checklist
In the final 5 minutes before your session, do a quick head-to-toe check. Make sure hair is out of faces, bangs are pinned back, and everything is sprayed or secured knowing there will be movement and wind. Check to make sure all shoes are tied. Look for crooked collars, bunched fabric, wrinkles, or visible tags. Empty pockets of phones, keys, and hair ties, and give hands and faces a quick wipe, especially for kids. Taking just a few minutes to check these small things helps your session start relaxed and confident—and keeps distractions out of your final images so the focus stays exactly where it should, on you and your family.
