Choosing Between a 30-Minute Session and a 1-Hour Session: What’s Right for Your Family?
One of the most common questions I get is, “Should we book a 30-minute session or a full 1-hour session?” The truth is—there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Every family is different, every child is different, and every session has its own rhythm. My goal is always to help you choose the option that best serves your family and gives you a relaxed, meaningful experience.
The 30-Minute Session: Short & Sweet
A 30-minute session is perfect for families who know their window is small—and that’s okay.
Young children often fall into one of two categories:
- Some need a little time to warm up
- Others have a very short attention span and are done once they’ve given you their best
For children who are easily overstimulated, quick to tire, or simply not interested in hanging out for long, a shorter session can be the sweet spot. These sessions are efficient, focused, and still full of beautiful moments.
What to expect from a 30-minute session:
- Ideal for small families or updated portraits
- Minimal transitions and movement
- Typically yields 10 fully edited images
- Great for kids who give it their all… briefly
The 1-Hour Session: More Time, More Variety
A full 1-hour session allows space to slow down and breathe.
- This option is especially helpful for:
- Larger families who want multiple groupings
- Families with several children
- Sessions where you want more variety in poses, prompts, and connections
With more time, we can move at a comfortable pace, allowing kids to warm up naturally and parents to relax into the experience.
What to expect from a 1-hour session:
- Time for multiple family combinations
- More candid moments and storytelling
- A wider range of poses and expressions
- Typically yields 25-50+ fully edited images
- More variety in your final gallery
A Special Note for My Special Needs Families 🤍
As a special needs mom myself, this is a space I hold very close to my heart.
I absolutely adore working with other special needs children, and I understand that their needs vary widely. Some children have a very limited window before they are completely done—and that’s not something to push. Others need extra time to warm up, observe, and feel safe with me before those genuine smiles appear.
Both session lengths can work beautifully for special needs families:
- A 30-minute session may be perfect for a child with a short tolerance
- A 1-hour session may be better for a child who needs time to build trust and comfort
There is no right or wrong choice—only what feels right for your child.
No Matter What You Choose…
No matter which session length you book, my promise to you is the same:
- We will create beautiful images
- Your family will be respected and cared for
- Your children will be met exactly where they are
The most important thing is choosing the session that fits your family’s needs, your children’s personalities, and what you’re hoping to walk away with.
If you’re ever unsure, I’m always happy to help guide you. We’re in this together—and your memories are worth it 🤍
